Dr Craig Rose published in Resorting to the Coast conference proceedings

Dr Craig Rose presented a paper on Reef North East: A Novel Approach to Coastal Regeneration at the 2009, Leeds University, Centre for Cultural Change (CTCC) conference, Resorting to the Coast.

Reef NorthEast was conceived and is being driven forward by Dr Craig Rose in partnership with Newcastle University and the Scottish Association for Marine Science. With immense support from various stakeholder groups, North Tyneside Council have recognised the potential of the project and, through a successful application for a Sea Change grant, funded a socio-economic feasibility study. The study, undertaken by Wood Holmes, demonstrated strong support for the concept and potential economic benefits for the region of up to £14.3million per year.

The proposed reef aims to:

  • Enhance recreational amenities

  • Promote educational and cultural outreach
  • Provide suitable habitat to increase biodiversity
  • Provide coastal defence
  • Ensure world-class marine research and spin-out business opportunities

More information about Reef North East can be found on the Reef Northeast website.
