Work is now underway on a commercial R&D programme, managed by Dr Craig Rose, in the area of Seaweed Anaerobic Digestion (SAD). The programme was set up to meet the challenges of providing sustainable and consistent biogas for heat and electricity generation using the globally available and under-utilised natural seaweed resource.
Over the next four years the R&D team aims to optimise the SAD process and seaweed cultivation and harvesting to provide a commercially viable and sustainable source of energy for Scotland’s island communities and, ultimately wider global markets.
Dr Craig Rose said: “We have chosen five R&D providers with academic and commercial backgrounds in anaerobic digestion and strong marine science expertise and we believe this is an excellent opportunity to significantly improve the biogas market.”
