The new website for the exciting ReefNortheast project is now live! The project is a partnership between Wood Holmes, Newcastle University and the Scottish Association for Marine Science.
ReefNorthEast is a novel concept to see the research, development and deployment of a truly multipurpose artificial reef and regional icon off the North East English coast. The project aims to:
* Enhance recreational amenities
* Promote educational and cultural outreach
* Provide suitable habitat to increase biodiversity
* Provide coastal defence
* Ensure world-class marine research and spin-out business opportunities
ReefNorthEast will be a focal point and icon of the coast and the wider North East of England region, providing numerous recreational amenities such as enhanced surfing, diving and angling, and onshore facilities for beach users. It will offer habitat to a wide array of marine species, supporting biodiversity and commercial fisheries.
The reef will protect the coastline from long-term rising sea levels and increasing storm frequency. The innovation required for this exciting project will ensure world-class marine research, education and cultural out-reach.
Dr Craig Rose has also had his paper about the reef project – “Reef NorthEast: A multi-purpose artificial reef project for the NorthEast region” accepted by the conference committee for the ‘Resorting to the Coast: Tourism, Heritage and Cultures of the Seaside‘ conference in Blackpool on the 25th – 29th June.
